KIDS CORPORATION II

The Educational Service

Kids Corporation is, at its core, a mechanism for procuring and distributing resources to improve the quality of education for

Newark kids.  The Educational Service, then, is the backbone of our mission and every other program we operate.  The Ed Service offers the full range of Kids Corp’s academic and human resources to groups operating educational

after-school or summer programs in Newark, including churches, community centers, shelters, and schools, so that

these groups can provide better academic services to their children.  We pool collective resources and make them available, through local educational groups, to the children living, studying and surviving within Newark’s borders.

Annually, we estimate that 3,500 children are directly involved in programs that we support and/or operate, and

an additional 500 children receive our resources via local human services.  The Educational Service has been

supported since 1973 by the generous and innovative people at The Victoria Foundation.  In addition, the partners, associates, and employees of Lowenstein Sandler law firm frequently participate in large-scale book bag, school supply, and toy drives.

The resources we make available, at absolutely no cost, include the following:

  • Classroom supplies and materials through Kids in Need Resource Center and private donations.

  • Six subject curriculum for grades 1-6, containing full summer of math, reading, writing, science, Newark history, and lifeskills lesson plans.

  • Sets of books and teacher guides for the reading curriculum.

  • Teacher workshops and training for summer educational program staff.

  • Tens of thousands of new and used books for libraries.

  • Access to Kids in Need Resource Center's clothing and winter coats for needy children.

  • Coordination, scheduling, and transportation to hundreds of field trips to local sites such as Newark Museum, Liberty Science Center, city pools and parks, and the Star Ledger plant.

  • Thousands of tickets to cultural and sporting events like NJPAC, NJ Symphony, and Newark Bears.

  • Backpacks filled with school supplies each September and toys for the holidays.

  • Medical exams and follow-up treatment, including eyeglasses, dental care, doctor visits, and insurance enrollment.

  • Weekly trips to Kids Summer Camp as a participation incentive, including environmental science education, art classes, pool time, nature hikes, and leadership training.

  • Funding advice and guidance.
