Summer Teaching Assistant

Kids Summer Schools, a model program operating at one site in the South Ward this year, is seeking adventurous and passionate educators to work with Newark's children. Kids Corporation is a 35-year old organization serving 4,000 children in Newark, NJ. We run summer and after school programs; we provide curriculum and materials to 39 different youth development programs throughout the city; and we operate Kids Camp, a day camp for Newark kids.

We are looking for motivated people who are passionate about working with children to provide them with educational inspiration and guidance. You will be working alongside an experienced teacher and another Teacher Assistant in our Kids Summer School, teaching one subject to rotating classes of 20 students in either the lower school (K-4) or upper school (5-8). The program gives the opportunity for college students to get hands-on experience working with elementary school children in inner city schools. By the time the halfway point of summer, responsibility for the classroom will be handed to you, the Head Teacher will take a backseat, and you will have the opportunity to truly experience the urban education profession. Teacher assistants also accompany their class on weekly field trips to museums, the zoo, local businesses, and Kids Camp.

Benefits:

$175 per week for seven weeks (8am-3:30pm three days per week, 8am-5:30pm two days per week)
Americorps college or graduate school scholarship of $900-$1,000
3 college credits in Urban Education from St. Vincent College (transferable)
Opportunity to work with and get to know 20 other college students from around the country
Weekends off

Requirements:

Minimum 1 year of college
Ability to work with children in a classroom
Good character, sense of humor, integrity, and flexibility
Previous experience working with youth in a classroom setting
Strong supervisory skills
Energetic and enthusiastic
Willing to have fun and make a difference in the lives of children

Responsibilities:

Supervise and lead children through their daily activities
Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving in and out of the classroom
Provide opportunities for children so that each child experiences success during the program
Teach creatively in order to make learning fun
Assist in planning weekly curriculum and daily lesson plans
Serve as a good role model for the children
